Mystery decanter marked MADE IN / MG&S / ENGLAND
« on: September 06, 2008, 07:06:02 PM »
Frank — Brilliant.   I've had a mystery decanter for getting on for a decade now, which has baffled everyone who has seen it, including Roger and Nigel.

Heavy, good quality blank, engraved stopper and rim No. "48", restrained simple cut pattern, acid-etched "MCG / MADE IN ENGLAND".

Grateful thanks,

Frank & Andy — Apologies, I've just found this decanter, and I was wrong about the acid-etched mark (but, perhaps surprisingly, correct about the stopper number).

The factory mark actually reads "MADE IN / MG&S / ENGLAND", and is in small thin lettering with the "MADE IN" AND "ENGLAND" arranged in a circle like the Webb and E&L marks, etched on to the neatly ground out and polished pontil mark.

The cut pattern is similar but not identical to Andy's set of glasses here, being a little simpler with no criss-cross infill between the stars.

Has anyone any ideas about "MG&S"?

Should be separated topic.

Max Guggenheim & Sons - 52 Bedford Row London (1955 & 1962 references)

Importers - Continental, Czech, Japanese, German glass.

Outsourcing of decoration in UK would justify Made in England.

No reason either that it was made for factoring by MG&S.

n.b. I have not confirmed that they used this mark.
