Gorgeous lamp base id if possible please
« on: September 14, 2008, 12:11:36 PM »
I started off thinking this was Italian but now I don't know. Any help on id and age would be nice. Lovely dark red with lots of gold in the clear frill.

Thank you. Should I get this moved to the Murano board and see if any more info turns up?

It looks like it was made by either Salviati or Barovier & Toso. Both companies made glass like this. I am leaning toward Salviati. The type of glass is blown, then rolled on a form to give it the pattern. This type of glass was popular from the late 19th Century to the 1950s. I hope that someone else can zoom in closer on the year.

Not quite sure about that description. looks more like the pattern came from optic moulds. ;) with crimped rigaree.

You are right that it is an optic mold. It is called a balloton. It is a form used to create a pattern, such as the diamond quilt in your lamp, on blown glass. Balloton blown glass is still made, of course, but your lamp looks like it is an older piece to me. Very pretty! Do you plan to wire it?

Soldivo, It is 10" or about 25cms tall. Yes I am sure it is a lamp base as it has a raised bit like a tunnel roof across the base for the wire. So we know it is post the introduction of electricity.
txsilver, I plan to sell it  so won't rewire it also I have no idea what type of shade woul have gone on it.
