Blue Salviati Murano glass, Judaica Passover cup?
« on: September 17, 2008, 10:36:48 PM »
My mom asked me to sell this for her on Ebay.  Her aunt gave this glass to her almost 50 years ago and it has been in the curio cabinet ever since.  The sticker says Made in Italy Salviati Ec Murano.  I have been researching and believe it is an Elijah's Cup, used at Seder dinner during Passover. Her aunt was a world traveler and had been to the Holy Land, Europe, Asia, etc. I do not know if she bought this in Israel or Italy. I do not know what the Hebrew writing says either. Can anyone help?  Is this gold leaf or gilding or enamel?  It looks like it was covered in gold and then scratched away to form the artwork. Should I wait to post it on Ebay when it's closer to Passover? It is 6-3/4" tall and the base is 2-7/8" in diameter. The opening is 3-1/4" in diameter.

Any advice would be appreciated!  Thank you!

Debbie

I just found out that the figure on the glass is actually Michelangelo's statue of Moses.  I mistakenly thought it was Elijah!  Thank you for any more help you can provide!

I can't be of much help when it comes to the value of the glass. I believe the label is from the 1950s. Salviati glassware was often gilded (is that how it is spelled?) or enameled. Yours looks like it is gilded with gold. The white spots look like enamel paint. Hope this helps a little.
