just got this today after nearly 4 months of waiting, it's signed on the base A Barbini , but i've been looking in all my books and can not find his sig, i think its a real one but not to sure, i got it from the states and very cheap, the seller's title was " a nice art glass dish " no mention of Barbini only that it was signed on the base and the photo was very blured even i could'nt make it out so i took a chance and i think it's has paid off, anyone else think it's the right sig?

Hi Ray,

Novice though I am on signatures, I found this in 'Italian Glass, Murano:Milan 1930-1970'

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/barbini-sig.jpg

To my inexperienced eye there are several similarities with the flow of the signature and style of writing looking correct. The text underneath reads; "Diamond-point engraved signature, 1960s-1970s", so it would appear to fit.

Edit: Just one area of concern, the up-stroke from the 'i' to the 'n' does not look quite right, but signatures always modify over age so the examples given (Anne's link also shows very close similarities to the one in the book) might not be truly representative. But given that the dish was sold without being attributed properly, it does suggest genuine.

Ray -

Have you looked at the bottom under a loupe to determine if the signature is under the age related surface scratches or is it on top?  If on top of the wear, then a dead give away the signature was added later. Just a thought  8)
