13" Blue-green Satin Glass Vase
« on: September 29, 2008, 08:49:10 PM »
I bought a 13" vase a couple of weeks ago, but I have no idea what it might be. It is a nice blue-green glass with a light satin finish -- no or very little iridescence. It has a nicely finished thumbprint-indented pontil area. Does anyone have any idea what it might be? I have seen a couple of vases like this attributed to Loetz, but the glass is thicker (1/4" at the rim) than the Loetz I have handled. I have never seen Loetz in this color, which is midway between blue and green. The glass looks like it would date from 1930-1960 -- just a guess.

Thanks for any help,
Anita

I'm wondering if this could be a Carlo Moretti 'Satinato' piece.   I've owned three pieces of Satinato - none were this shape or colour but I'm not familiar with exactly how many shapes and colours were in this range.  The finish of the glass on yours certainly looks OK - the shape I'm less sure of.  It might be worth investigating however - even if just to rule out ...

Thanks for the suggestion, Pip. I looked at the Moretti vases. Most of them were cased with light interiors, but there was one in the Pina Italian Glass book that looked like it was the same color inside and out. The satin finish on the Moretti glass looks more careful than my vase. The satin finish of mine is thin. The color of mine looks Murano or American, though, so maybe...

I haven't seen the pontil area of the Moretti vases. Do they have the indented pontil?

Something is clicking in my mind that there is a company that made satin vases very similar in form to Moretti's satinato. If I am remembering right, this company made some tall vases that are often misidentified as Moretti. I think one of the vases was shown here on the GMB. I'll have to check through and see if I can find the thread. It may have a clue.

I found this decanter that is listed as Blenko. http://www.goantiques.com/detail,midcentury-modern-glass,1382509.html.  It reminds me very much of my vase. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of the bottom of the decanter. My vase is not signed, but I believe that many Blenko pieces are not marked. Could this be a Blenko? If so, I hope the two vases like mine that are being sold as Loetz on eBay do not meet their reserve/opening bids.

Blenko would be good. I have been looking for some good Blenko.

Anita, it'd be worth having a look through these sites to see if there's a match:
http://www.blenkocollectors.com/ and http://www.blenkomuseum.org/

Thanks, Anne. Great sites for Blenko! I checked the sites and didn't find anything similar in shape, though I did locate a color that was a good match. I guess I'll keep this one on the shelf for a while until I can put the right ID on it. I am a bit skeptical of many internet sites that sell glass, because I've seen so many mistakes in attribution. For the decanter link shown in the link given above, I wasn't even sure the topper went with the bottle. It looked odd together.

Yes,your bottle is Carlo Moretti in Satinato from 1959. I am looking at my red 13" satin bottle
with a clear satin stopper from my desk right now. With the stopper on,it stands about 23". I have seen these in red, green, blue, dark blue. I'll post a picture next week, when I have some more time........Jerry from Wisconsin

If You can get a copy of Popular '50s and '60s Glass (Color Along the River) by Leslie Pina, you will find a picture of your green bottle on page 160! This book shows more ...Satinato glass than my Carlo Moretti Book! ...............Jerry

Thanks, Jerry! After looking at the vase for a while, I had become more convinced it was Moretti, but not certain. I feel a lot more confident now. I don't have that Pina book, but I will be on the lookout. Her Italian Glass Century 20 has quite a few satinato pieces, but none exactly like this vase.

I saw a similar vase with a colored rim that was being sold on eBay. The seller also said it was Moretti. I am glad the vase is something good.
