Sommerso - but all Murano?
« on: August 29, 2005, 01:00:00 AM »
Here are ten items from my collection - Sommerso (my passion) - bottles at the back, faceted oblong vases, and a fly topped piece - at the front two faceted bowls with texture underneath - so anyone got any ideas?

I know the fat faceted red is Murano as it has a label

The two textured ones at the front could be Campanella - although Is It Whitefriars has one pegged as 'American Art Glass' - not sure where they got that from...

All the rest are of course by 'Flavio Poli'  :D  If you believe the Ebay listings.       :D

Hello David555 and Max,
I think this was mentioned before on here, but this "Poli" pieces that are all over Ebay are being manufactured right now. I have seen all those shapes at the shopping mall myself, even the flared cut vase and the textured pieces. Of course thay are at a high end glass store, but they are there.

I really dont know David555, if the pieces are new or old, but I would agree with Max in being careful about attibuting them as old Flavio Poli pieces.

Hope this helps you understand what is going on in the market right now. Sorry I cant be of more help.

All the items are 1960s, I have had them for about ten years and picked them up from a house clearance - all 60s stuff ceramics and lighting - so I know they are good to date -LOL ref Flavio Poli - I never attribute without good ref or a signature or label - there are two bits not from the house clearance, the large red bit and one of the textured bowls - the red sommerso has a worn label (yes I know it's generic, but it has that age ware to it) - the textured bowl is in keeping with the other - I have similar bowls from my parents they bought in 60s - so I am at least 100% sure of a 60s - 70s age, do not think are Poli (I never mentioned this) - I was wondering if anyone could ID the Items - to help I will show some individual pics - as below - but in the end, I like them  :D

Hi David555,
I mentioned "Poli" and so did Max, because that is the reference used on Ebay for anything in the Sommerso style these days. I didnt mean to imply you had said so.

I don't think there's any doubt that they are all Murano, altho where the "new" ones are produced exactly I wouldn't like to hazard.

Going by the colorways they seem right for vintage in the main, the green/yellow, red/yellow and lillac+ all look like vintage colors. I have my doubts though on the turqoise and yellow flat beaked piece and the amber and green block vases. Those 3 look newer to me but could be that I have just not seen them before.

Having said this, another very experienced member here said that on a trip to Rome he was shocked to see such large shop displays of these styles and would have difficulty distinguishing between new from old.

As to the Campanella, 9 pieces of this range are shown in Italian Glass Century 20 by Pina, but not this shape. From what I can tell the texturing looks exactly the same as those but I have seen at least one bearing a Mazzega label........ !

Thanks Paradisetrader - I think the beaked bottle could be 80s 90s but I think the two block vases you mention are 60s, 70s - I was in Milan recently (I am in the furniture trade) and took a trip to Venice - I did not get over to the island but saw many of these smaller vases single colour with old worn labels (I forgot my camera) - they were mostly generic Murano but in antique shops as old, and had that feel - I am going back in a few months time - I will do more research there

I love buying Carlo Moretti in a shop in Central Station Milan, the owner gives me such good discounts

I have never seen a Campanella piece in the textured bowl style - they are all sharp angular or curved flat fronted vases with textured sides - Mazzega interests me and I will look into it, but who knows what people stick on to sell items

like here is a picture - architectural in Scanda style but has a 'Made in Italy' label on it - is it genuine, what do you think?

You must have seen the megaton of panel cut somersos in the tourist shops then.

the purple one in http://tinypic.com/beh30x.jpg I have in green/amber - same colour setup as your beaked somerso jug, and it has a rectangular foil label that says:
HANDWORKED GLASS
HANDGE ARBEITETE
      GLASER
made in murano Italy

I think you can be fairly sure these panel cut pieces are all made en masse  in Murano.

As for your blue http://tinypic.com/bg4q2o.jpg with a "made in Italy" label, I think you'd be looking at Empoli, not Murano - perhaps IVV or VB
