Sorry for the typo, I meant maestro!  Good eye to see it, as the seller didn't know what they were dealing with.  Ebay is great for learning.

Should it not be Stankard.

Hi tzenka

If you want to see what Stankards can fetch - take a look at Selmans auction lots 134 - 144

Best regards

Derek

Thanks guys; I've been an admirer of Mr. Stankard's art for ever (since I saw one of his pieces for a first time), and I have a very good idea of what his works cost, new or used, which btw is why I don't own any...

I did not however know that he signed (some of) his pieces with a simple S, so I thought I'd check here. Thanks!

Hi Tzenka

During the years that Stankard was making papeweights - not the botanical ones - he used a different signature cane each year.

Some Pre-1976 and all post 1992 he used PS - the other years were just S although the colour and style of the S and surround varied each year.

Best regards

Derek

Great to know! So much info out there on antique paperweights, but not much on the live masters. So, we learn from experience :)

Yes, that is so true! When I was first into "antiques and things and a beginner with paperweights" the dealer friend who got me interested had a weight for sale that had a black "S" cane and a single piece of lampwork. I saw no design or edition numbers on the weight but suggested it might be a Stankard piece. He later said that during the afteroon of the fair he was at, somebody picked it up, asked no questions and bought it for the price on the label. Doh! I should have bought it when I first saw it, even though items over the £100 mark were a bit daunting for me at the time, and even if I was a bit unsure of it. Ho hum! Live and learn! Maybe another day!
