Boxed set of knife rests
« on: November 17, 2008, 08:36:50 PM »
Hi

I have this set of 12 knife rests in original box.  I've found these similar examples which state Bimini style
http://www.knife-rests.co.uk/knife_rests_details.php?pid=159
Can we get any further than that?

The box has a printed mark stating "Made in GDR" - where is GDR?  Otherwise the box has no makers name or anything, has a handwritten 8,35 (price?) and sticker saying
" Ru   Ra" on top line and
"520 /1 " underneath (looks like that!)

Thanks

GDR=German Democratic Republic (1949-1990)

Thank you.  So Lauscha is the type of glass, and Thuringia is the factory?  And the reason people may think similar things are Bimini, is because Lauscha glass is exported to Italy for working there too?

sorry for being a bit ´cryptic´...  :)

lauscha is a town in thuringia and center of a region where lampworked
glass is produced. this type of glass is called ´fadenglas´ - sorry, don´t
know the term in english.
other traditional products from there are things like christmas decorations,
figurative lampwork, marbles...

Lauscha is the city and famous for its glassblowing industry, and Thuringia is the region. Bimini glass was made in Vienna, Austria - nothing to do with Italy http://www.theglassmuseum.com/bimini.htm

Fabulous!  Many thanks all.  Yet another example of why not to research using Ebay!
