Chance ? glass again
« on: September 05, 2005, 01:46:42 AM »
Now I've managed to take pictures of the five pieces of Chance-type glass I acquired this weekend...  one is Calypto, three others are a grass and butterfly pattern, the fifth is a flower, grass and butterfly design.

Does anyone know these two latter designs and can confirm them as Chance glass please? (all white designs on clear glass... photographed against indigo card to make the design stand out clearly).

Calypto (for reference only):

Unknown pattern #1:

Unknown pattern #2:

There are two unknown patterns... I thought they were the same when I bought them, but on closer inspection when doing the photos I realised they are significantly different. I've not seen these patterns before - either for sale online or "in the flesh" as it were. Intrigued now!

I see what you mean: the sandwich trays and dish seems the same, but the bowl (nice piece!) appears to have a flower included.

Very similar in other respects, particularly with the butterfly included, so probably the same maker, I would have thought.

But how similar are they to the Calypto dish?

The larger sandwich tray is the same dimensions as the Calypto one, except it curves up slightly more... the Calypto one is flatter at the edges.  The smaller sandwich tray is slighter flatter than the large one, but still slightly deeper than the Calypto one proportionately.  The bowl in the same style as these sandwich trays is sort of triangular with rounded corners (if that makes sense!).  All those three are the grass/butterfly pattern.

The smaller bowl is the other pattern (grass/butterfly/flower) and is perfectly round.

Hmm...nice glassware Anne.   :)   I haven't seen this pattern before, and I'm not sure it is Chance.  Your plates looks quite heavy, like the glass might be thicker?  Maybe Chance did a higher quality range?

It's hard to say....we need that book on Chance glass!

I've just been and measured the glass thickness with my steel rule and the edges of the unknown patterns are the same thickness as the Calypto plate. The plates that are the same size feel the same weight as well...  the edge looks thicker on the unknown patterns as the gilding is better on them... the gilding on the Calypto one is more worn and I think this makes the edges look thinner.  Overall they look and feel like Chance... when seen alongside the Calypto plate there isn't a noticeable difference in size, weight or quality.

But, you're right Max, we do need a book on Chance Glass!
