Vasart? Canes sitting very high?
« on: November 21, 2008, 02:47:25 PM »
Something about this weight made me wonder if it might be Vasart or thereabouts?

The canes seem to sit quite high on the cushion, and there are a number of loose bubbles in the dome, which is quite high.  The bright red seems rather a sharp contrast for Strathearn?

Diameter is 2.5 ins 65 mm.

Thank you very much!

The fence, the only difference being location and propane gas used at Crieff.

For correct terminology of the fence, courtesy Kev, see http://www.ysartglass.com/Vascat/VasStrVS001.htm

It's all very interesting, and most confusing (in a good way... 8) )

Looking through the Vasart pages, I also noticed PV003 - do you think the pink Maltese cross type canes in my weight are similar to the Maltese crosses in this weight on Scotland's Glass?  And if so, I presume it would be normal for Ysart developed canes to be used in later Vasart/Strathearn weights?

Thank you very much!

Thay just moved everything from Shore Rd to Crieff, including Vincent Ysart. So for the first year or so Strathearn weights can still be regarded as Ysart weights, after he left... I suppose it could be said they are Ysart style. Note that in the glassware catalogues no distinction is made between the company names other than to indicate in which of the 3 periods designs were proven by marking or labelling. Once the Leaping Salmon was utilised then the thickness of the glass increased as the thickness that was being used would not support the seal application. So with the glassware too there will be some that cannot be accurately attributed to a period other than transitional. ('on the fence' being a term best not used!) It is possible that the use of Propane gas from day 1 at Strathearn will have made a detectable difference - but no idea how. However, we do know that they found a new source of colours and it is possible that someone could follow this up with careful study aqnd the weights probably are the best references to use for such a study. Even that would not eliminate the transitional period as they would have continued to use the same stock after the change of name.

Transitional it is, and I hope I have explained the vagaries ok (I have referred to Ysart Glass and back here if people are interested).

So unthoughtful of them wasn't it, not to realise what troubles they were storing up for their unsuspecting collectors of the future!   I think more glassmakers should be producing (and signing) their work with a sharper eye to future celebrity...   ;D

p.s. I do quite like the term "Fence Period" ... 8)
Thank you very much!
