Marcus — An old bird, possibly the late Jack Read, retired local headmaster, once told me never attempt to be objective.   He explained "Why attempt the impossible?   Just be honest, and ensure your reader has enough information about you, your remit, and your modus operandi to be able to come to a judgement for himself."

Hmmm, isn't this dependent on context?  Most journalists, for example, have to strive for objectivity in their reporting.  The goal is (or should be) to take the writer's personality out of the story, rather than add his/her information to it.

My work, per se, is not political...

Yeah, I didn't mean that.  I just hadn't thought much about that aspect of your research, but it makes sense, of course.  To be honest, your area of glass expertise is such foreign territory to me that I hadn't really given it much thought.  It's nice to hear about it and get a better idea of the background that goes into researching the subject; it gives my understanding greater dimension, even if I'm still not able to ID a single piece of Sklo Union glass.

Thanks for posting the link to (and writing) the review, Frank.  It sounds like a great book.

In a sense, most glass research these days is political. In the past it was enough to only talk about the glass, but today we like to hear about the people and the social aspects... well some of us do  8)
