Found a beautiful fish vase! Could it be Murano?
« on: February 06, 2009, 06:10:24 AM »
Hello. Travis here. I just have to say first off, how excited I am to have found this website. :chky: I love glass, and have really been trying to familiarize myself wih it more and more. I luckily, have a knack for finding really nice pieces, but so much of it is unmarked, it gets really frustrating sometimes just trying to find a name of an item you just found. This is one of many posts I'm sure I'll be posting in the future, so thanks in advance for any help. This piece is a fish vase I acquired last week. I was told it was Murano, but can't verify that. Does anyone know who may have designed it, or if it is Murano? Thanks alot, Travis.

This fish reminds me very fish by the fish that were made by Altaglass of Medicine Hat., Alberta. It was started by a Czech immigrant to Canada. Try looking at the fish on this site: http://altaglass.ca/index.php?set_albumName=Fish&option=com_gallery&Itemid=30&include=view_album.php&page=1

Fish are a difficult area, seems like everybody everywhere made them and still does

Gee I wonder if my fishy in this post http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,18450.0.html might be Alta Glass too?

That great link to Alta Glass there - langhaugh.  Thanks

Thanks David for the info. I looked at that site, and I really don't think it was made by them at all. Here's why I think that. 1. All of their fish are clear glass, or semi transparent. 2. All of their fish seem to be the same fish or close to it, just in different poses. 3. None of their fish are vases. 4. All of their fish are very small in size compared to this fish. 5. None of their fish stand on end. 6. All of their fish look very inexpensive (some just look like fancy paperweights). 7. None of their fish have anywhere near the detail this fish has.

I was told by the people I got it from that it was Murano, and it looks just like a Murano piece. But this is good. You never know till you ask, and I think we're heading down the right road. Though some side roads are dead ends. We just have to get back on the main road and find the right side road that leads us to the answer. At least we can cross one maker off the list. Thanks for the help. I would love to find out the maker and designer for sure. I truly believe that it is Murano. Hopefully someone here will know.

This fish could be Italian, but it's a generic kind of fish style/design and so you might never find the maker.   :'(

Travis:
I think you're right about it not being one of the fish on the site I sent you for all the reasons that you suggest, especially the points about the base colour of the glass, and how it stands. You could add that none of them have a a white eye with a black dot in the middle. Some Altaglass fish do have quite a lot of detail, at least the ones I've seen. However, the main reason that I suggested Altaglass was that I vaguely remembered a similar fish somewhere with a label on. I think it was in a local antique store. I'll check back in the store in the next couple of days to see if it's still there. If it's similar, I'll ask if I can take a photograph.

BTW, how big is your fish? As it didn't get away, I expect accuracy.

Antiquerose: Yours does look like Altaglass, which, given your location, makes sense.

I went back and looked at the Altaglass fish. The fact that the fish exceeded my very limited expectations for Altaglass made my memory improve the fish even further. The Altaglass fish has its attributes, but it's not like yours. I agree with Shandiane. Either that or a non-identifiable Murano furnace.
