Huge Beranek bowl.
« on: February 27, 2009, 09:34:10 AM »
Hi,
I saw a Beranek bowl in a small shop selling antiques yesterday, they were asking £40 for it. The bowl was black with a random red pattern towards the inner centre. The bowl measured about 12" diameter and probably weighed 4kg at least, I could hardly pick it up. There was a round red Beranek label and the etched name Halivanek in block letters on the base. Any ideas on origen would be appretiated.
Thanks,
Bryn

Beranek are from the Czech Republic - or rather I should say 'were' since I heard recently that Beranek had closed down - might be worth going back for it maybe?

£40 sounds like a good deal for a Beranek bowl that size!

Thanks everyone for your help, I actually returned, no that should be rushed,  to the shop to purchase the afore mentioned bowl this morning and found that my interest shown in the piece yesterday had resulted in a David Dickinson Real Deal scenario. The shop owner has now decided to take it to auction.
Ah Well ::)!

Naming no names, but a specialist tells me that these were mass-produced pieces and that it may or may not make £40 at auction, so don't lose too much sleep over it, Bryn. ;)

LOL that'll learn 'em (as my old neighbour used to say)!  My experience of buying contemporary glass at bricks & mortar auctions is that the selling prices are very low generally - I'd be hugely surprised if they sell it for more.  Do you know which auction it's in Bryn - it'd be interesting to see how much it actually realises.

Hi Pip,
I just looked in the shop and the bowl is still there, unpriced. Apparently they are awaiting a visit from a rep from Anthemion Auctions in Cardiff to see the bowl and some other items (tat!, you will see less chips in Blackpool) that they also want to auction off.
Pip, did you see my other question on Tamara Aladin's Kleopatra jug?
All the Best,
Bryn
