This is a good quality controlled bubble dish, diameter exactly 5", neatly drilled and fitted with a chromium plated Dunhill trade marked reservation / menu card holder.   It weighs 1lb 2¾oz.

Two queries:
  • 1. Maker, pattern number, date, &c?
  • 2. Why the Dunhill trade mark?   Surely it's use as card holder would have ruled out the use of the dish as an ashtray.   Or did Dunhill supply non-smoking accessories, just to increase awareness of their brand name?

  • Thanks for your interest.

Dunhill sell all sorts of up-market giftware, even the odd bit of furniture. I once had a superb Art Deco desk with their nameplate inside the drawers when I had my shop.

It wouldnt surprise me if Whitefriars had something to do with it , when they made items for other companys they didnt go in the catalogues IE Parker  - Ronson -  Aspreys . I will check it out with the ex staff .

You could ask the bubble nutters on Whitefriars.com who sit up all night counting the bubbles . ;D :chky:

JP — I'm a rib and other pattern repeat counter, so it is to my shame that I forgot to count the spirals of bubbles on my dish.   Thanks for the reminder to include this important information.   ;D

So, "I counted them all out and I counted them all back," twice — to make sure, and there are 24 clockwise spirals of bubbles, and 24 anticlockwise spirals of bubbles.

Bernard, have you thought about contacting Dunhill directly?  In one of the London Dunhill shops either in Sloane Street or Bond Street (sorry I can't remember now which one) they have the most wonderful museum containing all sorts of original Dunhill items and a curator who would, I'm sure, be delighted to help.

Did you manage to find out anything about this piece Bernard?  I'd be really interested to know if it *is* WF and what it's purpose is...

    Hi Bernard,
     I would say 100% Whitefriars...................

John Hobbs pointed you in the direction of the ' Specialist ' web site Whitefriars.com but I have saved you the trouble ...............

Check out this extract from the work book of Harry Dyer where 'Dunhill' is mentioned. what AT stands for I do not know but you may have thoughts ?????

    Regards,
                  Patrick. :)

    Hi Emmi,
I think you are spot on..................   I think Bernard's piece is in fact an ASTRAY.  The metal part could easily hod the cigarette safely and then let you pick it up for another 'Puff'

    Regards, Patrick.

Ps. Bernard....... if you are up for a sale , please let me have first go at it .
