I was browsing ebay and found a glass mushroom with similar design as this paperweight: http://www.flickr.com/photos/art-of-glass/sets/72157612811514951/

I was unaware of what signature on the base read until I saw the mushroom on ebay where it's clearer.

I was wondering anybody knew what 'SMS' meant, if anything at all?

Hi Seventh-tree

SMS stands for Suffolk Manor Studio.

I don't know whether it is still running, but you are in the right place to find out!

Let us know what you find out.

Best regards

Derek

Hi there.

I think the artist is still working, but maybe not still under SMS but under his own name -  David Brett.

My own SMS paperweight (usual cameo carved effect, but mine has elephants) is signed "SMS England 2003 David Brett".

Cheers

Hi Keith

No sorry nothing from me, the latest weight I have of his is dated 2004.
There is a fair chance that given the name that the studio was located in Suffolk.
There is another glassmaker in suffolk called suffolk studios with a web site that
have been trading since 1981 so as suffolk is a rural county there is  a chance
that they may know of David Brett. Give them a call and see what they know !

Best regards

Derek
