Blown Ribbed Amber Bowl for ID help please
« on: April 09, 2009, 06:38:55 PM »
This is a stunning bowl I picked up the other day. Amber in color. Swirls. 13 Ribbed. Large open pontil. Just not too sure of where it's from and a date. I though it to be 1800's and maybe from the Pittsburgh area.... what do yo guys think?

Thanks a bunch
Jennifer

Thanks!
Hmm I'll look into it. I was just reading a bunch on the net. I think it's a milk bowl. Ohio glass made ribbed milk bowls and I found a photo of a similar one on an auction site except the ribbs were vertical. They call it broken swirl. http://www.glassinternational.com/auc15price.html
They were mold blown in similarly to the flasks. Which would make sense on the ribbs. This bowl is full of pot stones and bubbles as well. Also has quite a bit of base wear. hmm?

A few similar items here. The tankarts are Spanish (identical ones spotted in Spain and in Mexico) , not so sure about the bowl, but the similarities are unmistakable. Broken pontil, folded rim, mould blown....

That is a very difficult question and will lead to guesswork. The green tankart with the broken pontil I would assume end of the 19th ct; the brown one - even if in the same manufacturing method, somewhat later perhaps mid-century. But the bowl, not a clue, really.
