Extremely Rare Bagley Glass items

Even though I have been writing about and researching Bagley glass for the past ten years and more, there are some rare items that I have never seen. There are now over three thousand glass enthusiasts who are members of the GMB, and maybe some of you have these rare pieces in your collections. So if you have, or used to have, any of the following please can you let me know. Here is the list of items I would really love to see:

• Bowl no. 3186 which has been named "Scarborough"
• The square stepped base with mitred corners which fits under the Perseus and Andromeda lamp
• Art deco bookend shaped like a sail boat
• Art deco bookend with a curved top and straight line pattern
• trumpet shaped vase with flower band, registration number 790480
• bottle shaped vase with cut glass design, registration number 816035
• Acorn lamp shown in the 1937 Royal Visit booklet
• Kookaburra (or Kingfish) wall lamp from the 1936 coloured Bagley catalogue

They are all pictured in our book on Bagley Glass, http://www.glass-time.com/orderbagleyglassbook.html,  but the pictures of these particular items are from advertisements or catalogues or design drawings. I am not even sure if some of them were ever made.  Any information or pictures would be really welcome.

Hi Angela,

I used to have a Perseus & Andromeda lamp with the base. I've attached a couple of pics of the complete lamp below. I used to have a photo just showing the base but i can't find it at present - it may have been one I lost a couple of years ago after a hardware failure.....

Hey Steven that is brilliant,
That's the clearest picture I've seen of that lamp. What a pity I didn't spot it when you were selling it! Can I use your picture next time I do a new edition of the Bagley Glass book? Also, can you remember where the wiring went and what the light fitting looked like?

Hi Angela,

You're more than welcome to use the pictures, though the quality is not great. They were taken with my first digital camera which was more a glorified webcam so I don't know how good they'll look in print. Anyway, I'll dig out the full size versions & e-mail them to you.

The lamp I owned didn't come with a fitting so I don't know exactly what type would have been used. The base was slightly domed in the centre with a hole in the middle so I imagine it would have taken a similar fitting to that seen on the tulip lamp. There was a moulded indentation for the cable to exit under one of the mitred corners, I think you can just make it out in some of the pics.

Sorry you missed out on this, it was a few years ago now that I sold it. If I come across another example, I'll be sure to let you know.

Other rarities I've seen of which Angela, no doubt, would appreciate photographs are:-

• 934 Table Lamp with tilting shade support, similar in style to the Davidson Good Companion Lamp, with the shade drilled in the centre.
• Leek Andromeda Table Lamp, which is the reason for the bayonet fitting version of Andromeda.   The same lamp was also fitted with a rocket, probably not by Bagley as it's the wrong colour.
• 3025 Tulip Lamp with close-fitted bakelite base incorporating a switch.
• 3025 Tulip Lamp, Zimmerman version covered in chrome leaves.

It maybe I'm being slow this morning, but could you clarify this one for me?

Leek Andromeda Table Lamp, which is the reason for the bayonet fitting version of Andromeda.   The same lamp was also fitted with a rocket, probably not by Bagley as it's the wrong colour.

Angela — Thanks for that!   I had visions of you going cross-eyed trying to marry up a Welsh vegetable, a table lamp, and an Andromeda figurine. 

Not that sort of leek — Leek was a Birmingham metalbasher, like Zimmerman. 

Their address is variable, depending on who you ask.   I have E&J Leek, Alma Works, Alma Street, Aston, and a Google search yields a possible alternative company or building name of "Levics".   I think others, possibly including Chris & Val Stewart, have one or more completely different Birmingham address(es).

The lamp is a chrome ball containing the bulb on a chrome spreading foot with a switch.   Andromeda or the Rocket plugs in the top.   All that metal and no earth connection — a health and safety nightmare.

... which reminds me ... here is the new Channel 4 link, which you've probably not seen.

If you are still interested I have just purchased on ebay a Bagley "leek" lamp but this one has a green equinox bowl/shade on it.
When it arrives would you like some photos of it?
