Confusion about 3 ebay pieces I am interested in ??
« on: May 23, 2009, 09:06:01 AM »
Hi everyone,

I am interested in all three of these pieces on Ebay but am not 100% clear as to which is an actual Riihimaeen Lasi "PALA" piece by Helena Tynell C1964. According to Our Fire & Sea book page 63,  it was produced in Vaseline and lilac glass. Any help would be very much appreciated.....

Sadly don't know how to link directly to ebay, so here's the listing numbers:-

140321907314- "PALA Ice cube vase"  (looks too patterned to me?)

110391503174- "Dartington vase/inkwell" in Pewter-
(Not Dartington, and looks more lilac? but looks closest to the original design?)

160336152657 - "Pala vase" ( looks olive in colour)

I like all three, but only want to purchase the true Helena Tynell one.

Many thanks Sharron

hi Sharron,
my non-expert view would be the same as yours. second (funnily the only one, that says something
different) seems to be a real Pala. perhaps someone will be able to give some information on the other
two.
meanwhile you can compare your watch-items to Pala vases on

The two square ones look ok to me, but I don't usually get into the fine details of this style.  Ask the seller to check for nibbles around the top rim...when I've had these in the past they've always looked 'chewed' around the top because the glass is fine.     :)

Thanks guys,

Glad i'm on the right track, and thankyou for such prompt responses.

Will check out the link, thanks Dirk.

Will chase up the "nibble" too.

I am more interested in the listed as an "Inkwell" which appears to be lilac in the photo??

As always its a gamble with ebay.... descriptions...colours etc... but if its the right price

Thankyou Sharron

As far as I remember Pala was made for more than ten years in a variety of colours and sizes in smooth and textured versions. The first example does not look to be Pala, the following two do look 'right'.

The alleged Dartington 'inkwell' looks like a regular Pala vase to me.  It's unfortunate that the seller chose to use 'inkwell' to describe it since there was a Dartington Inkwell vase that is rather rare (although it's a big old thing and nothing at all like an actual inkwell - I have one) so I do hope no-one mistakenly thinks it's one of those.

Edit: the first one definitely isn't a Pala vase - haven't a clue who did make it though.

Hi everyone,

Seems the concensus of opinion is that I would be ok bidding on the "inkwell?" and Plain "Olive" listings regarding authenticity.

I would very much like to see a photo of your Dartington piece, Pip, Could you post one on here please?

As for someone buying it as a Dartington piece, well I don't really want to go down that blessed path.  I contacted an ebayer yesterday claiming his listed candleholders were "Kosta Boda," and I have a boxed pair, which are most definately Galway glass!

.... AND I just might get this "inkwell" if we all keep quiet ......  ;)

Many thanks to you all, and especially Dirk, that link you gave earlier is now in my favs- fab fab fab!!! I adore Helena Tynell,  Will be pointing Mike in that direction for upcoming B'Day pressies.

Sharron x

Hi Sharron, yes click the following link to go to my original post here a few years ago trying to ID my Dartington Inkwell - it has been positively identified as one and Mark Hill told me at one of the various fairs that it was believed that only one van load of jet pieces ever left the factory.  I now have one each of the three shapes in this rare series - Inkwell (in Jet), Volterra (in a smokey blue) and Candy (in Amber).

Hi Pip,

It amazes me just how much one can learn from this board.  Your inkwell vase is quite something, and the thread an iinteresting read.....I then flicked through Mark Hills book and found the other colours on page 55 which you mentioned.

Another tactile shape for me to look out for......thanks for that.

As for the listed "inkwell" come "PALA" ( I hope to be bidding on), I really can't see how the seller came to this conclusion!! But it is very similar to other Dartington gems.

Thanks, Sharron- always enjoy browsing your site.....
