Hi, hope you can help.

I have a small collection of 60's Glass Tumblers that were given to me by my Mother and I love them dearly.

I have no idea who the manufacturer is other than that they are original 1960's, smokey glass, heavy tapered base.

I have attached a photo to help as a discription doesnt do justice.

Thanks :rn:

Hi Michael,
welcome to the board,
i'm not positive, but i have a feeling these glasses were given away by Shell or BP garages,
in the 60s/70s, I seem to remember my parents having some.

Im sure other members will search their memories and correct me if im wrong :D
I suspect they were made in Britain .

Anyone agree or disagree?

Hi Andy

Thanks for the response.

I am sure that whatever they are they probably were not expensive, but I really love them because they are a perfect size and fit really nicely in my hand.

Andy do you know if this glass shape has a name?  I keep coming across U Shaped glasses which are used for stemless wine glasses but this is not quite the same shape.

Thanks for your help!

Id just call them tumblers, a couple of possible makers,
Holmegaard (Danish) Caithness or Wedgwood,
search on this board for Holmegaard tumblers, or have a look on this site,
http://www.replacements.com/crystal/manu/a.htm

may take a long time as theres hundreds of possibles  :o

Good luck

Pretty sure these are not Holmegaard and, despite the slight similarity in design, they're not Lemington either.

Must admit I see these (or very very similar) all the time in charity shops, I thought they were made by Arcopal or Luminarc

Sue,
you may be right.
Anyone think my theory of free gifts with petrol ring any bells ?? If so, they would have to be mass produced.
My Dad, loved anything 'free', he still does ::)

I remember having 3 or 4 of them.

I have a vague memory of tumblers being given away with petrol, but weren't they brown, rather than smoky grey?

I think they were given away with petrol (Esso) they did it with fancy looking wine glasses too in the 80s. in every charity shop you see.
