Bagley Duchess powder pots - help needed please
« on: May 25, 2009, 10:37:02 AM »
Can anyone who owns any of the Bagley Duchess powder pots help me by measuring them please? I have both the large and small pots in clear glass, and (thanks to Anne E.B.) a smaller size lid in blue. But..... the blue lid doesn't fit either size clear pot! It's much too small for the larger pot and is about 5mm / 1/2 cm too big to fit the smaller pot so I'm puzzled. If anyone has the smaller size pot in any colour could you please measure the diameter of the pot lid please and tell me what colour it is. Many thanks. :) (Pic attached to show which one the Duchess pot is.)

Maybe one's the Libochovicke Sklarny version, and the other is Bagley?

Nice if you could find points of difference :)

Hi Cathy, I can't find any of the Duchess pieces in either of the two Libochovice catalogues I have looked through (1920s and 1950s). There is a similar style pot (which I also have an example of) by Rosice, but although there are similarities, they aren't the same. Unless we can turn up more Libochovice catalogues we can't confirm that the Duchess pattern was a Czech one originally.

The Bagley State pattern, however, does seem to be identical to the Libochovice one.

Interesting. Was Marcus mistaken, or is he privy to further information? Might it be worth resurrecting the linked thread for further clarification?

As I understand it Cathy, Marcus has info on State pattern not the Duchess one, but I may be wrong.  I was talking to Angela yesterday about Bagley and the Czech glassworks, she told me that she was told that Bagley sold some moulds to a Czech glassworks. This is something we need to follow up if we can to find out what and when.

The blue Duchess lid has migrated north to Cumbria (thanks Anne :kissy:) so I'm adding a picture of it for reference.

What's interesting is that, in Bowey, Parsons and Parsons, Bagley Glass, it is stated that the Duchess trinket set only came in clear... so where did the blue lid come from?

Anne, I have four small Duchess pot lids in clear, the measurement of all four from underneath (the outer edge of the inner rim) is 82mm, and I have two large pot lids in clear, which the same measurement is 97mm.

They are all what I would consider very good quality, and what I presume to be highly polished bases.

The only difference I can notice is that some are a more greyish colour, and some more creamy in colour.

Also I have noticed that the Bagley State tray and Libochovice equivalent seem to have different tray patterns, and the Libochovice tray has feet, where the Bagley one doesn't.

Jayne, thank you! I'll compare your sizes with my clear and my blue ones. Like yours the clear ones I have vary, from yellowy-clear to clearer-clear.

The candlesticks are different too: the State candlestick isn't the one portrayed in the Libochovice catalogue with the pots/ringholder we see with the State set. The Bagley State candlestick is in the Libochovice catalogue as pattern 1886 (height = 110mm) whereas the one shown with the Lib. set is pattern 1881 (height = 136mm) - so was the 1886 a variant option I wonder?
