Kay — it's the mould blown Jobling B3 Bird and Corn Vase, rather a scarce item.   You should find the registration number 794903 (July 21 1934) on it somewhere, either that or Reg. App. For.   Original plaster design by the freelance Etienne Franckhauser of Lalique and Sabino fame.

I'm envious.

Thank you so much Bernard. We saw it early on in the fair and went to mull it over,we even had our lunch before venturing back to see if it was still on the stall.I must admit it did cost a pretty penny but now it has been attributed we are reassured, however, we can find no marks whatsoever does this make a difference? Thanks Kay

Interesting that this is another piece of Jobling without any marks as is my bowl. Bernard mentioned in the earlier thread that these are normally marked somewhere - I wonder why we're seeing unmarked ones?

I am very confused and need some help/ discussion.

First of all, let me say that I think your vase is fabulous, Kay, and I wish it were mine  :?

Now comes my confusion. Looking in the 'Jobling 1930s Decorative Glass' book (Baker & Crowe) there are two illustrations of the vase, plus a further one of the vase as a lamp base. None of them shows the bird in the same position as on Kay's vase. There is a catalogue illustration that shows it beak down, facing left. There is also a photo that show the other side (I assume) beak up, as Kay's is - but in that photo it is facing right...and Kay's is facing left.

Now it's possible that somewhere we have an image flip. That would explain it. But then I see there is a photo of one of these vases on Wayne's 20thcenturyglass.com website - and his appears to look the same as the photo in the Jobling book.

As I compare the photo of the vase on Wayne's website with Kay's, there are many differences. The bird's tail feathers, the wing feathers, the position of the waves, the corn etc. It's exactly the same concept - but is it exactly the same?

(One final note about reg marks etc on Jobling's glass - I have the Celery vase in vaseline - it is marked with the Reg. I also have the Bird and Panel vase in amber - it has no marking).

Glen — I am sure that this vase / lamp base has three birds on it, and that Kay has chanced upon the one not illustrated in the photograph in Baker & Crowe, or the one in Jobling's publicity.

Kay — if it's not too much trouble, please would you be so kind as to provide us with photographs of all three sides / birds, just to set Glen's mind at rest.

Anne — Unmarked Jobling '30s decorative glass is most unusual, excluding, of course, fittings like plinths, flower blocks and holders, centrepiece statuettes, lids, &c., which are rarely marked.   Some Jobling collectors are particularly choosy about marks, preferring Reg App For to the actual registration number, as it indicates a tighter and crisper new mould.   The same preference is found for the handwritten version of Reg App For, which indicates an earlier pressing than the moulded Reg App For.   Accordingly I always look at small Jobling Rose bowls for the mark.   Sometimes it is very faint indeed, and you can only see part of it, and that only if you know exactly where to look.   I must have examined some two dozen or more of these over the years, and I have never seen one without either of the two marks.

Any chance you could bring it to a glass fair for me to see?

Thanks Bernard, that is useful to know. I keep going back over the roses bowl and there is nothing that I can see at all - even with using a light behind to show up any feint marks and a magnifier there appears to be nothing.

Are you going to the Harrogate Glass Fair on 30th October? We are planning to - all being well - so I could bring it with me. I can't get to any of the more southerly fairs this year as I've too many rehearsal commitments to be able to get away for the few days it would need.
