Candlewax vase marked Italy! - ID = Borgonovo
« on: May 28, 2009, 10:02:58 AM »
This has been discussed before on the previous thread here:
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,24409.0.html

However I thought you would like to see some pictures of my latest purchase.
The larger vase is marked in tiny raised letters "Italy".  Although the glass is slightly clearer and brighter than the other one it appears identical.

Italy, that is unexpected! A friend bought two of these in the larger size recently, I will ask him to have a look at them and report back. My small candlewax vase is unmarked, I feel so deflated.

John.

The two larger vases are unmarked, so presumably they are Czech.

So now I can not call them Murano Sklo Sommerso Union Poli in an ebay description, fiddlesticks, John.

Does anyone know when the moulds were sold on, or why?

Sorry Anne, I meant to include the size

The tall one is 9" high (23cm) & 3½" (85mm) diameter across the top.
The smaller one is 7" high (178mm) & 2 7/8ths " (73mm) diameter.

Having seen a real candlewax candleholders and ashtray, and a marked Italian candlewax vase, it seemed to me that the Italian pieces were of inferior quality and feel.

pattern 20245/230 Hermanova hut  - Marcus Newhall's Sklo Union

But Mark Hill wrote in his "Hi Sklo Lo Sklo" book:

Examples have been found bearing the moulded word "Italy", indicated that moulds were possibly sold to Italian factories later.
I am sure that moulds had been sold and transfered somehere abroad few years ago, but it is all what I know for the moment.
