Well Glen,
I browsed my resources (mostly Czech) and I have found that "Barolac" issue is in fact only English issue.

I have browsed our trade make registers and "Barolac" trade mark had not been registered in Czechoslovakia. The biggest Czech glass history monography from 2005 (3 volumes in Czech language together about 2500 pages) does not mention "Barolac" at all, also Czech web gives no answer for key "Barolac", pages focused to Inwald also does not mention it.

Based on http://www.glassencyclopedia.com/Barolacglass.html I believe, that the name "Barolac" was used only for commercial purposes in UK with co-operation with Jenkins. It would be nice to discover if the trade mark "Barolac" was registered in UK, but I do not know how to acces UK trade mark register.

From here it looks that nothing like "Barolac" mould range has existed - "Sea world" range for example has been produced in opalescent form and exported as "Barolac" abroad - but in Czech language resources it is named only "Sea world". The categorisation given by Markus in Sklo Union book (www.sklounion.com) "Classic", "New" or "Modern" has no simmilar equivalent in Czech language - it was probably Glassexport marketing designation for foreigner markets.

My conclusion:

What is actually "Barolac"?

The commercial name used for distribution several Inwald's pieces in UK, not the name of exactly given fabrication range.

Jindrich

It's not in the UK or US trademark databases

There is no simple and easy answer to this puzzle.

"Barolac" was a range of glass made by Inwald for the UK firm, John Jenkins & Sons. Catalogues are known bearing the title "Barolac".

The pieces from the same moulds (???) were produced in Libochovice in poor quality still about ten years ago. Now when moulds are sold it can happen that we will see the "newest Barolac", I am afraid.

Glen have you please some catalogues that would help us to identify designers and patterns that we should put tho the "Barolac" range?
Jindrich

Hi Jindra,
At least some of the recent Libochovice production was, in my opinion, not from original Barolac moulds. I had a Libs seahorse vase, pattern was the same but the elements were differently proportioned, the fish in lower relief and importantly the mould seams did not follow the original wavy line of the seaweed as per early vases, but instead were dead straight.

The name Barolac was also used by US importers Weil, not sure of the date but post war & I'd guess 60s. confusingly, however, they seem to have labelled a wide range of Czech pieces, including old Hoffmann & Schlevogt patterns as Barolac. Weil impoted pieces usually carry a distinctive black on gold foil label reading 'Barolac made in Czechoslovakia, Weil, exclusive importation'.

From Glass Study:

US Trade name data 1951

 Barbolac — Nelson Bead Co., New York. N. Y. {Glass-Study.com: possible misprint for Barolac}

 Barorac, Czechoslovakian giftware — Nelson Bead Co., Inc., New York, N.Y. {Glass-Study.com: possible misprint for Barolac}

We've had a huge amount of discussion about this topic in the past. One pertinent thread is here where Jo from Australia posted a Barolac/Weil catalogue extract for us. Sadly the image is no longer there, but I think I have filed it somewhere.

Jindrich, I think the Barolac catalogue is in the public domain already (PK).

Actually, I left out a very important word when I wrote this above:
"Barolac" was a range of glass made by Inwald for the UK firm, John Jenkins & Sons. Catalogues are known bearing the title "Barolac".

I meant to include the word "originally".....i.e. "Barolac" was originally a range of glass made by Inwald for the UK firm, John Jenkins & Sons. Catalogues are known bearing the title "Barolac".

Here I am again (like London buses, you don't see me for weeks then suddenly LOADS!)

Here is the catalogue page Jo from Australian posted on the GMB some years ago. The tinypic has vanished, but she did let me have the image again and I saved it. As it was posted on the GMB back then, I am sure it is the right thing to do to show it here again.
