ID of heavy orange vase
« on: June 14, 2009, 03:24:26 PM »
Hi everyone - please go easy on me if I have done this wrong, it is my 1st post.

I am asking for someone to give me an idea of the maker of the attached vase.  I don't know a great deal about glass, but have been avidly reading the posts on this website for a while.

The vase is orange in colour, just over 17cm tall, 8 cm across the base, 2cm across the top and it weighs 680 grammes.  It also has a little wear to the base.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mel

Hi and welcome ;D  It looks very much like a Whitefriars lobed vase, but its not a colour I'm familiar with.

 Hi Mel and Welcome!

I'd say this is definately a Whitefriars five lobed vase also known as an 'Elephant foot' vase! as for the colour I'm COMPLETELY colour blind but you could try it on whitefriars.com I'm sure someone could give you the colour, year, pattern no. etc

                     Cheers

Thanks for the welcome Anne :)

Yeah the only Whitefiars lobed vase I can find is coloured on he stem bit but clear on the lobes.

Maybe someone else will come along and shed a bit more light on it.

Thanks

Mel

It's the real deal.

Pattern number 9728 in Gold FLC (Full Lead Crystal) - i.e. not cased in clear glass.
This colour is in the 1978 and 1980 catalogues but was actually used a couple of years earlier, also.

I had the full set of these until a klutzy friend broke the gold one.  So, if you get bored with yours...  ;D

LOL Chris, no way am I bored of it yet! :)

Thanks for your info, what other colours do they come in? Are they actually worth much, I bought this for £1.00 this morning (not because I thought it was Whitefriars, but purely because I liked it).

Thanks

Mel

I've seen them go for between £10 and £30 on fleaBay, so the girl done good, as they say about the footie.

From memory, there's ruby, kingfisher, meadow green, pewter, aubergine, sage green, lilac, gold FLC, aqua FLC and sky blue FLC.   Er, I think that's it for the catalogue colours.  The first two are by far the most common from what I've seen.  Aqua and sky are the rarest.

There may be a few friggers around in weird colours that the Whitefriars lads made for their own pleasure, though I haven't seen any myself.
