Silver Gilt/glass carafe and shot glasses - French?
« on: July 03, 2009, 12:44:17 PM »
I am posting on behalf of a friend who sadly is having to dispose of some of her late husband's estate.  This is a Silver Gilt (no marks though) decanter and twelve shot glasses.  Decanter stands 7.5 inches (19 cms) high and the glasses 2 inches (5 cms). Nicely etched and boxed with what I think is the retailers address.  Can anyone give any good information on this and advise where is best to sell it - preferably not ebay. TIA

Quite irregular - there are few countries more meticulous about hallmarks than France. You would expect a Minerve to crop up on all pieces. The proper term for gold plate on sterling is Gold Vermeil.

If you google the retailer you get here

the item is no longer there - but maybe the shop can tell you more.

Thank you Ivo, I'll get my friend to have a meticulous search for a mark (s), and inform her of the term " Gold Vermeil."
