Can you help identify this vase please ?
« on: July 03, 2009, 08:14:24 PM »
Hi this unusual flask shaped vase has many layers of glass in different colours.  pink cased glass on the inside and yellow blue and green .at first i thought it was handpainted but its made of many layers of thick coloured glass .has age related wear on the base so not a modern piece in any case too much work gone into it .measures 27cm tall x 17cm wide x and a depth of 9cm and weighs 1.5kg any ideas please ?
thanks Allan

Possibly one of the Maltese companies, Mtarfa or Phoenician. (not Mdina)

I would tend to agree, though I know fairly little about either of these under-rated companies - particularly their more recent work, some of which can be quite stunning.
A very nice piece. I like it very much. I tend to associate pink with Mtarfa more than Phoenecian.

Allan,
just thinking, im surprised if Maltese, theyre not signed.
Im sure youve looked hard, but nothing hidden around the base, lost in the pattern?
sometimes a place where some studios sign their pieces.
or lost in age wear scratches on the base?
By the style and colours, I wouldnt think its very old, but could be 1980s, which is
nearly 30 years, and a heavy item could pick up a bit of wear.

Cheers

I'd suggest writing to both Phoenician and Mtarfa to ask them.
By the '80s, it was getting far more common to stick a label on than go to all the trouble, work and time consumed of marking the all the pieces individually.
If you have no luck with them, the last Maltese port of call would be Gozo.
I'm sure it's from around there.  :)
