Hi

Craig's info is spot on.

While we wait for Alfredo's answer (and yes he is the best expert) I hazard that this is definitely Leotz, although Kralik and others copied this general stlye -no-one else really got candia papillon to look this good.

Dating Papillon is often quite hard as Loetz re-introduced it in the 1920/30s in different shapes -this I reckon will be a early c1900 one -very pretty

cheers

Mike

Hello again,

Alfredo has confirmed that this is a Loetz piece, as he has the same form in a Periwinkle blue with Sutterlin enameling. The Sutterlin enamaling on the piece would date his piece to the late 19th century. In that case, I agree with Mike, in that this piece is most likely a piece produced in the first period that Papillon was done 1898-99. I doubt that the shape was reintroduced or carried through into the 20's.

A nice find by your friend.....

Tell him since it is modern Chinese, and you feel sorry for him, you would be glad to help him out by reimbursing him what he paid, as long as he promises to learn from the lesson.....   >:D

It is, after all, the least a friend could do to help out....
