tchecoslovaquie glass basket
« on: July 23, 2009, 11:44:00 PM »
Hi,
I am trying to identify this piece in terms of age and company. I believe it is a Czech piece for export to France as it has tchecoslovaquie imprinted into the base. My research found it could possibly be L.E Smith Glass Co. around 1970's era - depression art deco? If anyone could confirm this or correct my guess it would be appreciated.  :)
Cheers
Russell

Hello Russell, and welcome to the board.

This pattern was made by the Sklo Union factory at Libochovice in Czechoslovakia, and can be found on vases, baskets of several shapes, dishes, rose bowls and so on...  examples from the range can be seen in the copy of pre-1958 catalogue on the CD which accompanies Marcus Newhall's book, Sklo Union Art Before Industry: 20th Century Czech Pressed Glass.

I believe that L.E Smith Glass Co. are (were?) an American company and don't know of any connection between them and the Sklo Union factories. Depression and art deco glass dates from the 1930s not the 1970s.

Tchecoslovaquie was used on glass exported from Czechoslovakia to France.  Hope this helps. :)
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd
