Signed lobed bowl - B640 - Elis Bergh?
« on: August 11, 2009, 01:59:16 AM »
Small low-profiled bowl with a lobed base in a fairly tint-free smoked grey glass. 180mm diameter and 35mm height.

Signed to the base only with B640, which seems to be the signing convention on Elis Bergh pieces for Kosta. Am I way off the mark?

Any help gratefully received!

I think you are probably right. I looked in Kosta 250 and thee were, to my surprise, I'll admit, some pieces pictured from the 1930's by Elis Berg that were signed "B###." Later on, it seems that Kosta was added to the markings on the bottom. The numbers appear to be sequential with B 228 dated 1931, B 376, 1932, and B 536, 1933, B 596, 1934, and B 1225, 1937, which would make your piece about 1934 or 5, I reckon.

Good find, although the motto if its not Holmegaard, it's not glass will have to be withdrawn.

Thanks for the information. It seems remarkbly ahead of its time for a 1930s design - it has a very mid-1950s aesthetic.

All a bit of Googling for the design revealed was that it's referenced in 'Fire & Sea' as 'probably' a Bergh design, and was available in a pale yellow colour, and also in several sizes.

There is a bowl pictured on page 138 of Fire and Sea and labeled "Kosta floriform bowl" and "likely designed by Ellis Bergh" this one is lavender in colour and the stated size is 34.3cm in diameter.

Elis Bergh was my great uncle and I have some of his pieces and I'm looking for the sister to a large vase with an engraved nude woman with elbows at the waist and forearms outstretched with palms up. Sorry I don't have a photo. I know at least one exists as I saw it on a website that I stupidly didn't save.

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forum Katarina.

Do you want to buy the vase you describe? If so, you would need to start a post in the market place: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/board,4.0.html

Finding the website again would help a lot I guess. How long ago did you see the vase?

Thanks for your reply, John.  I had a feeling that I was posting on the wrong topic.  Yes, if I can find the vase or another object like a carafe with the same engraved nude, I would indeed like to buy it.

I saw the website last weekend and have retraced my steps but alas, no luck. The design is late 30's or early 40's. As I recall the site was a bit 'cheesy' looking and I almost didn't scroll on it.  Something came up and I had to leave, ergo I closed it and can't find it now.

Thanks again,

Katarina

It may be possible to find the website again by looking through the 'History' of the browser that you are using (Windows Explorer/Firefox/Chrome etc). The History records every webpage that you have visited, different browsers probably differ slightly but the process will be the similar.

At the top of screen you should have the buttons FILE EDIT VIEW HISTORY etc, click on HISTORY and then choose 'Show All History', choose the appropriate time period (last week or month etc) you can then see a list of every webpage you have visited. Search through the list until you find the page you are looking for. Clicking on an entry in the list will take you to the appropriate web page. Be patient and good luck.

Thanks again, John, but I've done all of that.  Starting to think that I might have been hallucinating. Maybe I should just take a step back and resume in a few days.

I appreciate your taking the time to assist me.

Katarina
