you will not get away with this - unless you state in detail what the etching/ engraving/ stippling/ coat of arms/ mottos says.

What do you mean Ivo?

Norman, it is difficult to see any detail in your photos, does your camera have a 'close up' function or macro, sometimes shown on the camera as a small flower? If it does take some more photos with differing and darker backgrounds (this sometimes helps to pick out the engraved detail). If the camera shakes when you take a photo (mine does when I press the button) try resting the camera on a small cardboard box or similar so that the camera does not move.

I have all sorts of boxes for different heights, simpler and quicker for me than using a tripod. ;D

John

Hi John
yeah battled all afternoon to get better pics but to no avail as this type of glass is difficult.....will try your kind advice tomorrow as its moon light here at the moment.
The goblet was sold to me as dutch ....but after searching around i have discovered its the English royal coat of arms.....within the inner motif....it says...honi so q mal e pense...well thats what it looks like
and then in the lower scroll it says...dei v et mon droit
left side...crowned lion and right side a unicorn...
the motif is topped with a crown and in the centre....4 badges...top left three lions  and one to the right
top right 3 fleur de lys
bottom left irish harp ....bottom right two lions with a third one set right and then what looks like a crown or dome with a striding horse below.
the circle looks like a belt of some sorts with a buckle.
So i guess this is a whole lot better than my original post...where was my head?
A few night pics...
many thanks for your kindness
best
norman

Quite possible that this is a Leerdam crystal goblet made for the British market. Their historical replicas are of superb quality and were quite expensive (100-150 pounds) at the time of manufacture (1980s). The cutting seems to confirm it is recent - but not 100% sure due to photo quality.
It is also possible that the goblet was produced in the north (Newcastle/ Sunderland) or in Norfolk... but I'd need to see it close up.

Honi soit qui mal e pense (Shame be to him who thinks evil of it) is the motto of the Order of the Garter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Garter). Dieu et mon droit (God and my right) is the motto of the British monarchy (See left-hand image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:UKofGBandNI_COAs.png)
