What colour is this IOW globe vase?
« on: August 12, 2009, 04:53:45 PM »
Bought this on fleabay recently, as you can see it is a (lovely) large Isle of Wight Studio Glass Globe vase. It has the flame pontil mark on the base and I noticed that the glass is quite a bit thicker than a tortoiseshell globe vase I also have here.
I thought the colour was probably Aurene but a friend thinks it is 'part of an unnamed range' but what would an author of historical fiction know anyway?

So I thought I would canvas opinions, any comments on colour (or pretty much anything else) gratefully received.

John

Aurene, no doubt whatsoever.
Every piece is individual, there are many, many variations within this named range.
It's lovely, well done!

I'm pretty sure it's Aurene in a colourway originally called Blue Aurene: top down blue to brown being Blue Aurene and vice versa Gold Aurene. Matches the colourways in Mark Hill's book. Date 1974-1979 with the flame pontil. What size is it?

I know Sue has just posted but I'm going to send my answer anyway

The more the merrier Christine, the vase is a little over 5½ inches (14cm tall). I was also hedging towards Blue Aurene.....

Diameter? Doesn't sound like it's one of the more desirable large ones though.

Again, a little over 5½ inches in diameter. How large can they be?

 ;)

I'm sure what the book says is that it's gold or blue Aurene, depending on which colour is predominant, Christine, not that I'm doubting you, 'cos I thought that too. :-*

What confuses me is that I've got a cylinder which has NO blue. I wondered about this for a long time, and if the Gold Aurene might actually be "rare".

I have just been to check a few pieces, and I think perhaps it IS whether gold or blue is the colour on top after all.
But I also play safe, and avoid using gold or blue at all, simply referring to Aurene.

I've got a Tortoiseshell globe about 8" in diameter, I'm sure Aurene goes up to this size. I'd love one, but the correspondingly enormous price tags on the very few I've ever seen have been prohibitive.

5.5" is still a good and substantial medium size.

I like the sound of the larger globe vases, shall have to keep my eyes open, perhaps I should start praying too.

I was very pleased with the vase when it arrived, sometimes fleabay works a treat. 8)

My thanks to you both, John.

Interesting how the spell checker does not flag up 'fleabay'. :D
