So what are these then? =Murano ashtrays
« on: October 19, 2005, 01:56:48 AM »
Well I have a few of these pieces in different colors, but they have gold (in a couple of them) and silver (in other ones) flecks throughout the glass. Are these murano? One of them had a tag on it when I bought it saying "possibly cluthra".

HELP!!!

Shannon

And this one is special. Because, it has gold fleck on the interior of the piece, but silver fleck on the exterior of the piece.

All of these are Murano ashtrays ("art glass bowls") with gold and silver foil or dust inclusions. The foil is laid out on a marble plate and picked up on the outside of a hot glass blob; this operation is called marvering. It is then covered in a clear layer of glass, and blown out or stretched out using pincers whereby the foil cracks up and is spread in more or less regular pattern.
Number one uses gold dust, number two silver foil and a red casing, number three silver foil on light blue with a clear casing, and the last one uses both gold and silver foil and two clear casings.
These are desirable pieces, and I hope someone will come by and attach the name of a probably maker to them. Number 1 and 4 have the best chance of ID-ing, the other two will probably remain anonymous.

Thank you so much Ivo! I bought them thinking they were murano, but then other people started tossing around stuff like "cluthra" and all of a sudden I didn't know what I had. This clears the air for sure. And yes anyone who could tell me possible maker would be appreciated.

Thanks again Ivo!

Hi Shannon,
I would not say these were made by any of the better known makers. I usually see them with "Venetain Glass" labels. They are usually Red or Green, in an oval shape, not any known makers label like Barbini, Toso, etc. I recently had 1 with the "Vetro Artistico Veneziano" label. Theres a thread on this board about that same label.

The only one that could be Seguso would be #1, because of the use of Red and Gold, but the shape is very similar to the "Venetian label" pieces, so it might not be. There really isnt that much researched about those pieces.
Hope this helps you out.
