Rauchtopaz footed vase with applied seals...
« on: August 21, 2009, 09:22:17 AM »
I had assumed that this was a Jacob Bang design for Holmegaard, c.1937 based on colour, shape and manner of decoration - but I've been unable to track down anything from the period that has such a figural applied seal. The Bang seals of the 1930s generally comprise of abstract squiggles, and recently comparing it to other røgtopas (rauchtopaz) pieces the colour of this vase seems a little too reddish.

So I thought I'd widen my search - could it be from one of the Swedish glassworks?

Height = 285mm Diameter = 135mm. The underside of the foot is entirely concave and finely polished.

The final image is of a similar decanter taken from Glas I Hjemmet, written by Jacob Bang in 1949. It has a different foot, admittedly, but Bang did also design pieces with this shape: http://www.glashistoriskselskab.dk/index.php?option=com_joomgallery&func=detail&id=3087&Itemid=59#joomimg

Does no one even vaguely recall seeing this very distinctive vase, or even a distant cousin of it, elsewhere on their travels?  :o

I'm now more or less certain it's not Holmegaard. It was, however, sourced in Denmark - so a Scandinavian origin is a strong possibility.

It is brilliant - you see how unmissable you are? You pose the question, start a discussion with worthy and clever arguments, and finish of the discussion by giving a positive ID. You're lightyears ahead!  :hiclp: :hiclp: :hiclp: :hiclp:

I should start a forum where I'm the only member. It would be a raving success! ;D
