Divided dish with RD no 741069
« on: June 30, 2010, 09:46:02 PM »
Found this a while ago and picked it up because of its RD no. (741069). Checked the Blue Book and Great Glass and it's not shown in either, but the date would be 1928.

Tonight I had an email from Thomas Joyce in Dublin, who has the same item, and who has a copy of the registration detail from the National Archive at Kew:

Quote
Registered: 741069, Class: 4, Date: 11 October 1928
Registrant: Edwin Kelley (British Subject), 41 Chudleigh Road, Brockley, London SE4
Copyright expired: 11 October 1933.

... one other snippet that Thomas mentioned was:

Quote
The interesting point about the registration number is that they supplied a photo of a ceramic dish to register the design

...which makes sense as the registration was Class 4 - Earthenware rather than Class 3 - Glass.

What Thomas and I would like to know is, who was Edwin Kelley? I can't find anything about him anywhere... so was he a china and glass merchant / wholesaler perhaps?  Has anyone heard of Edwin Kelley before please?

Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

that is very interesting Rose.   It may be of no significance, but I notice a spelling difference between Anne's Kelley and your Kelley  -  although I guess spelling anomalies ocur at a rate of knots when jumping the centuries. :)

Thanks Paul S.

I always try to help some here on the Board.....

That is what I thought too.  A lot of time the spelling over the years was not recorded correctly....so it worth a gamble.  Maybe Edwin went by the name of ED, Edward, and Edwin?? ??  For that matter, Edwin could be his middle name that he went by, as there are people that go by (...cough, cough...) their middle names even today... ;D

Thanks Rose :kissy: I appreciate your searching, but as this one would have been 78 at the time of the design registration I don't think it's the one we are seeking - not impossible of course, but unlikely I'd have thought.

Paul, the spelling difference isn't a problem as variants occur all the time... wearing another hat, I've been researching the Docwra family for years and so far have almost 70 variant spellings of that name recorded from documents through the years! :)

It might be worth mentioning here, as it's a comment which keeps coming up about Class III (Glass) and Class IV (Earthenware) registrations, that the National Archives guidance on Registered Design classes states that, "The title for Class IV - 'Earthenwares' does not give a true representation of all the items that may be found within this class. The Class IV volumes also contain items made from ‘other solid substances', items made from leather, stone and even soap may also be found here."  So why designs appear in Class IV when there was a perfectly good Class III for them is still a puzzle, but it's a good pointer that if anyone can't find a glass RD in Class III then a search for it in Class IV is a must, as Paul knows already from his more recent trawling the records for lookups. :)

Just to cross-reference this, we also have the pottery version over on the pottery board, with photos or the item and the mark on its base: http://pottery.yobunny.com/index.php?topic=11274.0
