Large copper aventurine vase - Nason?
« on: September 08, 2009, 07:15:07 PM »
picked this one up last weekend - rather out of interest since i havn't seen
this kind of use of copper aventurine so far.
the vase is made of black glass with marvered in flecks. the surface however
isn't completely smooth but has a bit of a mosaic touch. the space between
the aventurine pieces is filled with a foamy greenish glass.
the base is concave, the top rim is ground and polished.
anyone have an idea where it comes from or when it was made?

it's 34,5cm (~14") tall and weighs a bit more than 2kg (that's where my kitchen
scales end, so i can't be more precise)

TIA
Dirk

It looks a little bit like some of the vases by V Nason &Co but that is only a wild guess . There are also some modern similar ones being made .

thanks for your suggestion, JP. definitely a name I'd be more willing to believe than
e.g. Dalian or Joska - from my point of wishful thinking.
have you ever seen a vase with a structured surface like this? the Nason vases I've
seen were completely smooth, with the black glass shining through between the
aventurine.

thanks again!

Hi Dirk i have remembered the Nason one i sold within the last year the colour looked black but if held to a very strong light you could just see it was a very dark aubergine almost black , i also remember it had one small fleck of glass about the size of a large Bee in a blue/green colour like the colour in yours this obviously should not have been there ~oh before i forget loads of Aventurine . Thanks again for your help, Johnphillip, much appreciated!
Do you think the green is a result of a reaction between the copper in the
aventurine and another ingredient in the glass mass? I've also tried to find
a link to Nason in order to contact them directly - obviously I'm a bit thick
and didn't succeed.  ::)
Nor did I with trying to make out the colour of the black glass. I'll possibly
have to wait until the next sunny day, which I'm optimistically expecting
for next June.

Here is a similar example (in black glass) ...I think mine might be modern ...but it's just a gut feeling I have. Cheers, Mike.

Hi Mike,
many thanks for your reply. Your vase looks very similar concerning the technique.
I take it the surface isn't smooth like on my vase, but has a bit of a mosaic feeling?
Mine is black BTW, too. Perhaps it doesn't show too well in my pictures.
Perhaps the shape of your vase will give a hint towards a possible maker.  :)
Could you add some measures, please?
Cheers,
Dirk

Hi Dirk,
Sorry...forgot to add the height...it's 23.5 cm tall. It isn't smooth  and is made in exactly the same way as yours .

As you say it is very much like a mosaic with the marvered in flecks with this bubbly , white 'cement' over the black glass base. This bubbly 'cement'   <----- don't know what else to call it !, looks to be a creamy white colour under the base where you can see the original non-drawn-out shape of the aventurine flecks. There does seem to be a colour reaction going on with the cement which has a light green tinge in places. Also, on mine, it seems to have mixed/reacted with the black glass base as the cement in darkish grey in places.

It's an interesting technique and I would like to know how it is done. I don't understand why the aventurine flecks weren't directly marvered into the black glass.....why use this bubbly 'cement' stuff ?  Cheers, Mike.
