scandanavian glass no 3
« on: September 13, 2009, 11:27:56 AM »
no 3 - larger, heavier piece which I believe to be Orrefors
4.5 inches in height, weighs a massive 1.3 kg even though it is small.
Has an etched circle on the base with what looks like points of a compass and a pointer in the middle pointing to with north and south
No signature.
Thank you

That could be a company logo, my first thought was NATO's emblem, similarities but no match.

It reminds me of Leerdam, particularly the spikeball candle-holder and the beech nut vase.  See http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,23746.0.html   and http://www.botterweg.com/Auction/Bid/tabid/59/auctionid/6/tag/Leerdam/lotid/1374/language/en-US/Default.aspx and http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,24687.0.html

However, I've never seen that logo.

Hello David
Thank you for your information I did find it very interesting, I had never heard of Leerdam (me being such a glass virgin) and really enjoy the endless font of knowledge that is available on this site.
I have looked at the Leerdam sites and pictures you have refered to and can see that  there are definite similarities between my piece and the 'Beechnut',
the very precise nature of the bubbles and even the density of the glass.
It would appear however that Leerdam pieces were all marked and very precisely, so I may be back to square one...
Thank you though for assisting me with my education on this vast subject :hiclp:

Woodie:

None of the three Leerdam pieces I have are marked, which I was told, is not unusual for the pieces I have. In fact, there was a  spikeball  example on eBay  recently on which somebody had marked T.S., which the seller presumed meant it was designed by Timo Sarpaneva  It sold for $149.99.

For one piece I have, I ended up emailing Willem Botterweg, the owner of the gallery mentioned in one of the threads I referred to, and he was very helpful. He is an incredible font of knowledge on Leerdam. His email address is auctions@botterweg.com. Perhaps wait a couple of days to see if anyone else suggests a maker and then try him.

Good luck.

David
