Topic: Present from Newcastle

This vase was one of my late mothers.  It is 10 cm tall, bowl is 11 cm diameter.  Broken off pontil recessed up in the foot.  Foot has a folded in edge.  If held up to the light it looks brown.  Mum always wondered if it was Bielby?

Anyone out there have any suggestions?

Christine — Classic early to mid 19th century Sowerby, made in Gateshead.   See its lookalike on p48 of Cottle, Simon, Sowerby - Gateshead Glass, Tyne & Wear Museums Service, 1986.   The example in the book carries the message "A Friends Gift.", possibly by the same hand.

Lovely.   A real delight.

I am so pleased to have your reply but I don't have the book you refer to.  I will be adding to my glass books but now I am retired I have to be less extravagant - unless it is a piece of glass I like the look of!

And on the Beilby thought ... the answer would be a definite "no" because Beilby decoration was white enamel on wine glasses (etc) and the decoration was of very high quality.
