Large bright green posy?vase polished pontil 11" diameter.
« on: September 29, 2009, 05:50:10 PM »
Purchased this piece today as it cought my eye and has already grown on me out of all proportion :o ive never owned a piece of uranium and so because of the brightness of the colour thought it might have been a piece?. Its rather large at 11" diamter and sits on  a very nice foot with a polished pontil and lots of wear no damage at all. I dont know are these called posy vase? Is it possible to date and find a place of manufacture for it? It appears to of been made well and taken a fair bit of time although im not sure how you would go about blowing such a shape come to think of it if it were uranium would someone blowing it have dropped dead after making it i guess ive a lot too learn!!! :chky:

I think this may cause some trouble,if you look at my post 'confirmation of Webbs bowl' you'll understand,Webbs did a plain bowl and from what I've seen so did  Whitefriars,so I'll let some one else decide and stand back to see what happens,Keith.

Yes, this is referred to as a posy bowl, for obvious reason.

It would have been blown as a bubble, then opened out, spun and manipulated in a number of stages to form the shape, going back into the glory hole regularly. A variation of making a charger/large plate, but with a reservoir for water - and skillful glassmaking.

These generally date from the 1930's, but were made into the 1950's.

The green doesn't look uranium to me; does it go bright green in black light?

Nigel

Thanks for replying to this thread ive no means to test i guess it may sometime soon be worthwhile buying one of the black light torches maybe from ebay?? Ive not handled uranium glass before i just thought it had a chance it might have been.. I guess my initial perspective on this item being one for ebay is now i think over after reviewing threads on whitefriars.com it seems these items are a little out of favour a keper for my own collection...thankyou.

hhhmmm Very interesting threads bout this type of piece dotted around the internet, Starting too feel like it could be a piece of whhitefriars a variant maybe of a similar one but with a different base its size seems to be right they certainly did do an 11" piece does the colour look sea-green also. It feels quality and the pontil is slighty off-centre although this is not an authority i know. Did you ever sell your one anne ? Thanks for that lead it took me to isitwf there was one the same with another vase an it did seem to get the lion share of the votes as w/f  ?

And probably not uranium. Dark green uranium glass is not common - I only have one piece that dark. Someone's who's never handled uranium glass is unlikely to identify green glass as being uranium correctly. Even when I pick up my mug I can't be sure without a light - although for many, many other pieces I can, because of the number of handled.

Does it seem heavy for its size?

I'll post a picture later
