Identifying Vase - English, Bohemian, Italian? Who? When?
« on: October 06, 2009, 07:20:15 PM »
Good afternoon.  I am new to posting so forgive any contrived way of getting posts up.  This lovely glass vase stands about 7 1/2" high and appears to be opaline and heavily enameled.  I have shown 2 sides and the bottom.  Any information you can help with will be gratefully accepted.  Pat

Welcome to the board. My guess would be Bohemian and late 19 or very early 20th century

Thank you Christine for your insight.  Hopefully others will chime in with more information.  Pat

Welcome to the board Pat. I'm astonished, I thought at first that your vase was ceramic rather than glass... I've not seen one like that before.
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

Thanks for looking, Anne.  It is definitely fairly 'fine' (light weight, feels good to the touch) glass.  Pat

I doubt there will be much more information unfortunately. The shape is a variant typical of the period, but the decoration does not look top quality. In Bohemia, the large glass factories made blanks that they sold on to refiners who then got outworkers to apply the decoration, and there were many refiners with widely varying quality standards. Whole families used to decorate, from children to grandparents. Unfortunately, only the better and larger companies are documented to any extent.

Hi

Christine is spot on (as usual)

That type of blanks are sometimes called milk glass and were the basis for loads of different fashions in Bohemian glass from about 1880-1910 maybe even later.

I've seen ones like these decorated in the following styles, classic arts and crafts, ascetic/chinoiserie, historismus, islamic, even early nouveau - alas its almost impossible to tell who made them -there are quite a lot in the Passau museum all unattributed.

cheers

Mike

I obviously hang out here too much  :-[ There is also some stuff in the Passau that is wrongly attributed, as the same items appear in different cases attrbuted to differnt manufacturers

Thanks for your replies.  I would guess that these two are the same?  The first one has a recessed somewhat smooth pontil and the second one has no pontil.  Again, your input is appreciated.  Pat

Possibly not. The first one is much better quality. Is it opaline glass or just frosted?

The second is a different kettle of fish altogether. Is it frosted or iridescent?

I suggest you post them separately in new threads with dimensions and base pics and what the top rims are like
