whitefriars
« on: October 31, 2009, 10:11:06 PM »
I own a whitefriars paperweight model PB300 (the nice bouquet millefiori) on a light blue ground with a 1977 signature cane. I am sure that I read somewhere that this model was not a limited edition. However, my weight has a number engraved on the underside (108). Can anyone tell me what this number means? I am curious.

I did not post a picture of it but if it helps I will do so.

Hi

A photograph would be useful, but is it possible that this is one of the Smithsonian Institute weights which was a limited edition of 200 produced in 1977

I have not got one in my collection but there are pictures in the books.

Another thought is that someone has converted an "S" to "108".  >:D

Many thanks for the speedy reply, Roy. I will try and post pictures tomorrow.

Actually I did not even know that there were Whitefriars seconds out there (I have never seen one before but my experience/knowledge is very limited to say the least).

Hi Roy,

Here are the pictures. When I took them, I realised that the number may well be 106 rather than 108. However, I suppose that it makes little difference.

Please tell me what you think. In any event, I think that it is a truly lovely weight.

Hi Sophie

Having checked my weights, I find that I do have a similar weight to yours.

My weight is also on a blue ground but with a red rose in the centre and is dated 1979 and without the number.

Forget about my thoughts of an "S" weight being changed that is obviously a correct 106 engraving.

I can't find the info on the Smithsonian weight at the moment but I will keep looking

It may have been an Ebay sale which I failed to get !!!

Hi i believe thats the Whitefriars Clichy rose Brian Slingsby and Ray Anneberg are the people for more info on that
as Ray was the cane maker and Brian the technical manager , i think they will both be at Birmingham National Glass Fair Sunday nov15th . Brian made a nice video or rare canes and weights .

Hi Ray,
Hi John,

Many thanks for your messages.

To John:
This is good to know. I was intending to go to the Birmingham Glass Fair anyway. I will try and show the weight to either Ray Annenberg or Brian Slingsby if they are there. I will report the answer to this thread.

To Roy:
Hum, yes, it was an Ebay sale... I had been looking for (i.e. lusting after) this weight since I started collecting.
Anyway, some you win, some you loose ;D

Hi Sophie

Did your weight come from the US??

The video sounds interesting as I have nearly all the Whitefriars weights and most of the canes.

I wonder how one gets a copy?

Roy,

Yes, my weight comes from the US (so it would tie in with your Smithsonian theory). It looks as if I did beat you to it  >:D. In my excuse, this is my ONLY whitefriars paperweight. So, you cannot begrudged me this single weight

If you wish, I will ask Brian Slingsby about the video at the glass fair.
