Did Cenedese sign his pieces?
« on: November 01, 2009, 11:59:29 PM »
Saw a gorgeous large (14") vase with a very neat small signature 'cenedese'. Did not photograph the signature but here is the vase.

Clean and Crisp a Murano twist.
Archimede tops my list.

The company Cenedese marked many of their pieces, but it would have been done but one of he workers at the furnace.

That's one of the reasons I avoided using the word signature in my reply.

Here's an example from a scavo vase. The marking  looks much bigger in the photograph than it actually is. To give you some idea of scale, the base is about 3" across.

David

P.S. Just noticed that in my first post I wrote "but one of the workers." I meant to write "by one of the workers."

I've seen many of the more recent Cenedese pieces with signatures. Does anyone know if they started signing all of their larger pieces in the later years? The vase looks like it could be the work of Cenedese to me.

To answer your question Anita, it is very possible that the more recent pieces are signed.  Artifice (He is on the Fossilfly forum) and I had a discussion lately about a piece I have that is signed by Cenedese and Albarelli (diamond point signed).  I have been trying to date the piece with no such luck and he helped me date it sometime between 1992 - 1994 when it was made.  So this is very feasible that their more recent work could be signed (diamond point signed).  I wish I could post my vase but due to my camera being crappy I would not be able to capture a good pic of the signature but here is a current piece I found on Ebay.

I also just did a quick search on Ebay and found this piece.  It looks to be a bit more newer than the 70's though so it may be a newer piece but that is my opinion but it is signed as well.

To go back to Ardy's original question. Yes, Cenedese pieces were often signed, but not by "him." Gino trained as a glass blower, but only designed and did not make glass in the 50's. The current company was a result of a reorganization of in 1973 by Gino's son, Amelio, following the death of the father, and renamed Gino Cenedese & Figlio, still in business, I think, at http://www.cenedesegino.it/eng/index.htm
My recollection is that Amelio is a businessman and administrator. The picture in Ardy's photo I would think is later Cenedese, 80-90's.

The Albarelli connection would seem to be from about 1992, as Articifice suggests, when Cenedese bought the name Seguso Vetri D'Arte from Albarelli, who had owned the company since 1976. Albarelli kept the property. I would guess that Cenedese & Albarelli was a short lived business arrangement, despite producing what seems to have been some quality pieces.

There is a company on eBay, Design-and-arts, who offer stock somehow connected to this 1993 merger. They have a fair amount of SVA and Cenedese. I once saw pictures of their warehouse. I'd love to be left in there for a while.

Tami, this marking looks similar to the one I saw on the weekend.  I hadn't looked at much by Cenedese but this piece I like.

I was told that the silver base that shows between the swirls is done with mercury is that true?

David, I did check out the Design & Arts Ebay store and they really do have some awesome pieces.  Unfortunately, it would probably cost a mint to have a peice shipped to the U.S.  Boy that stinks.
