Is this a Mdina glass vase ID = WMF Ikora
« on: December 08, 2009, 07:57:51 PM »
I pretty certain this looks like a Mdina vase but thought it looks an unusual shape , I do not buy that much Mdina so could be wrong.

Height 7" or 17.5 cm , polished pontil mark  weight 1172 gm

thanks Roy

Roy,
thats an interesting one !
If its Mdina, its a very rare shape and pattern , its got a lot of Harris influences,
I very much hope it is Mdina, im gonna stick my neck out and say , i dont think it is,
I thought it may be a recent Mdina production, but it looks like its got plenty of age to it,
and maybe older than 1960s/70s.
Im very much looking forward to the opinion of all the Mdina fans on here,
I would have bought it!
Ive got my fingers crossed!
Andy

edit, its very much like the Mdina bowl on page 28!! Could be a Harris piece  :-\

Im sitting on the fence ;D

I would say probably not unless it is of quite recent production. The shape is not one I associate with Mdina and although the colours seem 'right' the yellow is a bit vivid and the way the darker blue is distributed does not look familiar.

Interesting vase, the glass is quite thick I would guess.

Saying all that I could well be very wrong. ::)

John

Have just read Andy's post, sorry do not see much in common with the bowl mentioned. Is that a polished pontil underneath?
I would have bought it too, if only to ponder....

Andy I am still on the fence myself, I bought it at Kempton this morning when still dark , everything was saying Mdina except for the shape.

Earlier this evening I was trying to think who made it if not Mdina and all I could think was someone like WMF Ikora but I think I ruled that out, as you say may be interesting

My first thought was WMF as I don't know Mdina at all well. I checked through the WMF book primarily to rule that out. However, although I couldn't find the exact colour combination or the exact shape, I don't think I'd rule out WMF yet.

Lovely find, especially in the dark. I must get up earlier.

Thanks John and David

There is a polished pontil and the base does show quite a lot of age so I would say not of new production.

The yellow is not quite so vivid as picture makes it appear, I would agree its sensable not to rule out WMF

Nigel's rule-of-thumb.
If it has 3 distinctive features which are right it probably is.
If it has 3 features which are wrong, it probably isn't.

It has 3 right features, although the bulge at the base is "wrong", it is an unknown shape (not necessarily wrong) and an unusual construction with the rim, I'd reckon, on balance, these are not enough to outweigh the others.

I may be wrong. I can't hold it and feel it and examine it properly.
