Sklo Union - Pleated Vase??
« on: January 04, 2010, 01:13:13 AM »
Description...
Pleated Vase - The design on the bottom looks like a Dahlia with 15 leaves. Also under the rim of the glass I have been informed it could be Sklo. I am not convinced! Vase measures 35cm in height.

Sklo simply means glass in Czech, so yes it is sklo, but as to what I think you're asking: is it Sklo Union? i.e. pressed glass production from one of the factories in the Sklo Union group in the former Czechoslovakia, that's a different question.

Extremely unlikely to be Sklo Union. When you say, "the design on the bottom looks like a Dahlia with 15 leaves. Also under the rim of the glass," how are the designs created (part of a mould, acid etched, etc)?  A picture would help.

Hi, I suspect that whoever identified your vase as being Sklo Union may have seen the vase on the link below on my website which I now know (thanks to Marcus author of the Sklo Union book 'Art Before Industry') is a Frantisek Vizner design.  Apologies for the poor photo and lack of base image - this vase was actually the very first item I sold from my website so it was taken when I was still a bit 'green' at photographing glass.

Whilst your vase bears a similarity in style to mine I don't currently know of any Sklo Union glass production having the type of base you describe and the shape of your vase isn't 'typical' for SU either - could we see a photo of the base please?

My feeling is that this vase is Polish.  I've got 2 which are very similar (and would have had a third if one dim-witted seller hadn't sent the piece in a box which was too small.)   I also know of one more, sold in an antiques gallery, though the price it went for is outrageous:   http://www.antyki-online.pl/cgibin/shop?info=wazSz8&sid=67c888d5

Description on site link by Anik incudes

Nazwa: Wazon szklany, ok. 1950 r.
Wazon szkło, Polska.

Can you translate that Anik? Is the glassworks name or Glass vase? Do they still exist? No lock in googling... except this site has a lot of glass http://www.nowinex.pl/4daction/NOWINEX_menu_rozwiniecie?vK1=96&vSort1=1&vKat=7#0

Otis - never had your base view.

It says nothing.  The title reads "Glass vase, c.1950", and the description reads "Vase, glass, Poland". No glassworks mentioned.
