1970's Murano sommerso?
« on: January 09, 2010, 06:26:08 AM »
Hi all - I am new to this Murano group - although I have recently posted to a couple of the other boards. I have started trying to identify some of the 20th century glass I have bought over the last 40 years - all bought just because I liked it.

I have recently bought some books to help me identify items, and I see what looks like this vase in Millers 20th Century glass, described as 1970's Murano sommerso (p 86) .  I bought this a while ago at a collectors fair. I would appreciate opinions from people who know Murano  as to whether it is in fact Murano and not just a lookalike.  :)

It is 13.5 cm or 5 1/4 inches high and weighs 1019 gr or 35.95 ounces . There are some slight wear related marks to the outer edge of the base only - not sure if you can see them in the base photo.

Any comments/opinions appreciated! Thanks

Hi all - there have been lots of views of this piece but no comments - does anyone have any ideas about it? . Would love to think I have a genuine piece!  :) The colours and layering is quite lovely, and there is reasonable base wear to it .

I am not so good when it comes to the layered sommerso pieces. The layers in the neck of your vase made me suspect your vase is Chinese, but I was not sure. In many Chinese pieces, the colored layers come very close to the surface of the vase and sometimes lose distinction. There is often inconsistencies in the thickness of the layers around the vase. Again, I am not so good with these types of pieces, so other people may have a better idea.

My thoughts were along the lines of Anita's, but I don't know either.

Hi jackie, i might have to third this as a Chinese piece. The second and third layer of the glass seems a little wobbly and uneven to be Murano (4th pic). I have noticed these popping up on ebay alot (especially Australia) with similiar colouring. Would it be possible to take a picture of the top half the vase like you have done in the fourth pic?

Hi Jackie, I am still going to say Chinese on this one unfortunately. There is something about the coloured layers in it that just doesn't seem right for it to be Murano in my opinion.

-Lucky you, W.A has some of the best beaches compared to the East Coast! Thankfully my countdown has begun (and hopefully it goes fast) till my move over their! Hopefully the glass hunting will be good as well  ;D

Hi Kane - well I am disappointed but still think it is a lovely piece.

You may be disappointed with the glass hunting over here after being in Sydney - we are very small and very  isolated! But the rest of it is great - wouldn't live anywhere else in the world!
regards

Don't be disappointed jackie, it is a lovely piece of sommerso glass and the main thing is that you like it! I have a couple of chinese paperweights that I will not part with!  :24:

-I am really looking forward to moving their. Thoroughly enjoyed it on my visit a few years back. I was planning on moving to W.A when I moved back to Australia from the UK about 2 years ago, but my grand parents were quite sick at the time. Since they have passed on it is finally time to make the break from Sydney and get to greener pastures so to speak! Most of my purchases of glass come from O/S anyway since it is very hard/rare to find the pieces I am looking for in OZ. Frustrating but what can you do  ;D

Hi Jackie, I thought this might be of interest to you as it is similar to your piece.
