ID Help Required Please for black vase with pontil mark
« on: January 25, 2010, 05:17:51 PM »
Hi All,

Any thoughts / opinions on the attached vase greatly appreciated.

Stands around 7 inches high and five inches wide and weighs c. 700grams. Black in color with a ground concave pontil mark to the base. Does have a fair bit of wear to base.

Haven't got a clue on this one so all help guidance appreciated.

Cheers,
Greg

 :)

Okay, to tentatively offer something - and hoping that someone will jump in & correct me if I'm wrong. It looks as though it might be modern and Chinese. I've seen very similar in homewares stores over the past few years - the light opaque splodge on a dark opaque ground is very familiar. That matt base treatment is characteristic as well.

That echos my thoughts too, though nothing concrete to back this up.

The base and the rim are not well finished, I have also seen them for sale but can't remember where - likely a discount outlet of one form or another (TK Max or another of my favourite haunts).

John
