Pietro Toso vase
« on: January 29, 2010, 05:08:11 PM »
I bought this vase on ebay for a few £, it was in the wrong category luckily.
Reading Murano Magic I've got a bit lost on dating it (roughly).
There are 2 Pietro's on the family tree.
The original one (1744 1801), obviosly this vase isn't that old so its safe to assume the second Pietro is the one I should be concentrating on.
The other being the son of Decio Toso, but no date, obviosly afterDecio's birth date.
Luigi Toso is the sibling (b 1937) would I be right to assume a similar date for Pietro, it seemed strange no date was listed for Pietro.

Sorry if I seem to be rambling on but this is the first time I've sat down and tried to work something out using a family tree.

Oh, nearly forgot in the write ups for the various members of the family involved in the industry there is only information on the first Pietro not the second.
Now my head is hurting, what do you think ?    :chky:

What a great find! I don't know anything about Pietro, either. From the looks of the label, I suspect it was one of the Murano companies that opened and went under in the 1950s. Many of these companies closed in five years or less and often are not mentioned in the historical accounts. Surprisingly, Murano Magic mentions Alberto Toso & Co., but doesn't mention some of the better failed furnaces.

Thanks Anita I am rather pleased with it to say the least, I payed £7 for it. Problem for me is trying to classify it reasonably accuratly in order to price it for resale.
By the way I am slowly re-photographing my collection as I lost the lot to my own stupidity. I have lots of animals only a few with i.d. If you want I'l send them to you for your zoo, no worries if you don't.    :)

Soledivo:  You have stumbled on a nice vase there.  I have never heard of Pietro either.  I understand the headaches after doing the research and still being confused as ever.  That's the wonderful world of Murano glass for you. :spls:  I hope you find your answers.  You have a lovely vase for very little money.  That is great and what a great label as well.

Hey I found something!!!!  Two lamps from the 60's (Not sure if that is correct?)!!!  Here is the link:

They are some cool lamps but, of course, I like Murano lamps. 8)

7 quid!!! You lucky  >:D, and with a label also! May I ask what the height on this piece is? Helps with my visualisation. I know nothing of this glass maker but I have heard of him.

I was so busy looking at the label, I forgot to look at the vase. It reminds me a lot of Moretti's satinato pieces. Most of the satinato pieces were made in the 1960s, so the lamp age estimate might be right.

Nice find at a great price.

Tami: well done at finding the lamp. I knew I had seen a Pietro Toso label recently but I would never have found i. Modernist Glass say that the lamp is from the 80's, which makes sense given the look of the label. Soledivo's label looks earlier.

There was another Pietro Toso lamp sold on eBay (#310185295702). This one has an old European plug and what looks like old style labels. We'll have to find out more about this company. Maybe they specialized in lamps, so we don't see much of them in the object market.

The vase is 9" / shade under 23cm high.

thanks for finding that link Tam, interesting what they have to say.

Althought he two labels are different in style (older / newer)
the text and format is the same which suggest it is the same company and Anita's example tends to supprt this.

But if they specialised in lamps why the vase,

I agree with you Anita, had not been for the label I would have been certain its a Moretti piece.
