Victorian pressed glass bull(?)dog
« on: February 14, 2010, 03:18:57 PM »
He's just 2.75 inches tall, beautifully detailed and in super condition. I assume he's Victorian but will happily be persuaded otherwise. Does anyone know where he might have been made? Fire finished pontil, two or three part mould (he has a vertical seam and another right round his head).

He is cleaner now  ;) . Excuse the fuzzy muzzle.

US Westmoreland or later re-issue. Virtually, identical form to Bohemian ones made by homeworkers but larger.

With those ears and that face and a studded collar I'd say it was a French Bulldog.

He's not the same as the modern Westmoreland dogs (those made from the original mould). Those have less detail, collar buckle in a different place, ears the same size and are generally more downcast looking. Altogether more cartoonish.

These were produced by Westmoreland as already stated & also by Fenton & Lancaster Glass in the 30's, but their production in terms of years was very short. You may read in some glass animal references that Tiffin made them, however this has been proven to be inaccurate in the case of either the large or small bulldogs. Ken

When did Westmoreland produce the originals?

About 1910, Bohemian ones were earlier.

Zoo access fixed Christine. See also in the Pelt text (part 1) which dates the Lancaster to 1915. I show two variations and comment "Is this also Westmoreland? Collar is reversed and not painted, slight differences in moulding too.... needs further research. "
