Vanity Set, Blue fade to Clear, Baccarat-Moser-Palda-?????
« on: February 18, 2010, 04:44:40 PM »
I've been trying to ID this set for 30 years! About 5 years ago there was a set on eBay and that Seller thought it to be unsigned Baccarat. Others thought possible Moser. I purchased the "Collectible Bohemian Glass: 1915-1945, Vol. II by Robert and Deborah Truitt. On page 16, there are "pages from a Padla catalog, printed in 1935 to commemorate Palda's 50th anniversary" that had similar looking bottles... But any search over the years for Karl Palda and this vanity set have come up blank for me. I purchased this set around 30 years ago in Alexandria, Egypt.  Any ideas are greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Just me,
Gail

Lovely set.  Im surprised that the stoppers don't match the decanters.  Really need an experts opinion.

Andy, thank you for the welcome.  :)

Bainsy, thank you for taking the time to look. I don't quite understand the "stoppers don't match the decanters."   Have you seen a set like this with different stoppers?  The faceted stoppers would appear to match the faceted finial on the covered jar, so I never thought about the possibility that they might not be original to the set.

I have SO much to learn about glass, and I do so appreciate you all looking and commenting.

Bainsy,
The stoppers all look all original too me !
I think its just the design, the finial on the little pot seems to be just the same, and must be
attached to the lid.
Maybe the design will give a clue to others on the origins?
Cheers

Welcome to the board, Gail!

Conical shape rules out Baccarat I'd say - JMHO  :-\

This is a Baccarat catalogue on my pages, and I have seen older and later ones, no real match found: http://www.glas-musterbuch.de/Garnitures-de-Toilette.54.0.html

Couldn't it be made in Egypt also? Perhaps under license of whom ever? Egyptian coloured glass has a long history I think

What a gorgeous set Gail!!!

Having looked at Truitt p16, I'd agree that Palda looks very likely - the bottom left catalogue page, 2nd row has some which look very like yours with the colour fading to clear. I've been through Schranky Vuni (Czech Toilet Sets) but there's nothing like it in there sadly. I'll go rummage some more!

What a fab set you have there!

Could it be Baccarat?
