Help with Helena Tynell signature please
« on: February 24, 2010, 10:13:43 PM »
Hello all,

I recently bought a Helena Tynell Kaulus vase on ebay. I'm very happy with it and am pretty sure it is genuine (12cm tall)(http://www.designlasi.com/en/content/kaulus-collar-t41-tynell-helena), although would like to seek advice from the experts as to what they think? It is signed, although the sig is not like any Tynell sig i've seen (my knowledge is generally restricted to those HT sigs on www.laatutavara.com e.g. http://www.laatutavara.com/images/7762_2.jpg). Which appear to be more blocky, where as mine is scripted, although on mine, it doesn't look like it spells Tynell (there appear to be too many letters, particularly between the T and the Y). Id appreciate any views.

On a more general note about sigs (i'm relatively new to this collecting lark, so bear with me), is it rare that a piece is signed by the designer? I have two other signed riihimaki pieces, a Nanny Still bottle vase and a Sakari Pykala dish. Both favour the capital block letter approach, are these more or less like to be signed by the designer or by someone else?? If so, who?

Many thanks in advance

Hi: I can't help you with this particular piece, but I can tell you that the designer very seldom signed pieces of Scandinavian glass, particularly production pieces. The writing would be put on by someone assigned to that task. It might be the same person signing for quite a while, which leads to similarities, or someone else might take over, which leads to some differences. Occasionally you will get signatures that seem to deviate from the correct spelling somewhat, or when the tool has slipped a little when signing.

Very nice piece, btw.

Hope this helps.

David

I would think the signature is fine, as David said they are rarely signed by the designer. Does yours say "Rhiimaen Lasi O.Y...." or just "Lasi O.Y...."?

Just for reference, here is another Tynell signature but this time on a 'Tippa' decanter http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-11778

That's great - thanks so much for the updates. I have always wondered about the signatures and how they were applied and by who. It does say the full Riihimaen Lasi Oy. On another forum, someone has suggested that it may be Tynell maiden name (Helena Tynell (o.s. Turpeinen)) as this piece could date from as early as 1949, as referenced on www.designlasi.com/en/category/muotoilijat/tynell-helena, if you search for Turpeinen it gives some detail. This seems quite likely, although i don't know if this is recorded elsewhere as such?

Thanks again,
Morus

Great piece, congrats.
Kaulus (collar) was designed in 1946. Helena Turpeinen and Paavo Tynell was married in 1947. So earliest Kaulus-vases are signed Helena Turpeinen :)
