square smoke bowls
« on: February 25, 2010, 04:07:46 PM »
Is there anything that can be said about these smoke coloured square bowls? Something faintly whispered "Denmark" but I could have misheard  :-[ . The bottom is fairly well finished: the press seams have been polished off to get a perfect stand.

I'm never sure about these bowls. They pop up quite often inset into wooden trays that are definitely made in Denmark, but I've never found any evidence that the dishes themselves are of Danish origin - at least by the two major glassworks (HG and Kas).

1970s examples of these tray/dish sets are often supplied with plastic dishes using exactly the same mould as yours, and so were probably outsourced production. There are examples of these sets with definite Holmegaard dishes, but these utilised existing Holmegaard production rather than having glass made to unique specifications.

The images below illustrate the 'Cabaret' series from the 1963 HG catalogue, and their use in a teak tray by Arne Basse.

The teak trays with inset are familiar - I have several with a KH sticker.
Good to know I was not too far off thinking Danish here.

Yup. That tray should be made by Digsmed, c.1964.
